Why We're Riding
HOPE - HEALTH - HEALING
Proceeds from Freedom Ride 2013 will fund the ongoing development and operation of our medical clinic in Po River Beach, Liberia. Located in West Africa, Liberia is a country that
has been devastated from 14 years of civil war. This violent upheaval has left the Liberian nation with extremely limited access to electricity, clean water, roads, and medical care.
There are only 22 doctors in the entire nation struggling to serve a population of over 3.9 million, leaving hundreds of thousands of children and adults without access to the most
basic and critical medical care.
FULL TIME MISSIONARIES
In early 2013, former Freedom Riders and now full time missionaries, Jen and Steve Butwill embraced their calling and moved from Central New Jersey to the remote village of Po River,
Liberia to complete construction and begin operation of a medial clinic (click here for more information). Leaving behind a successful career as a
pediatric ICU nurse in the United States, Jen is a Certified Advance Practice Nurse and has a Liberian Nursing License and certified to practice in Liberia. Steve left behind a career as
an engineer and brings his business and technical leadership experience to Po River serving as the on-site project manager. Jen and Steve are living and working hand in hand with local
Liberians in and around Po River to provide access to life-saving treatments from diseases such as Malaria, which has plagued this region for many years. As missionaries, they are
bringing hope, health and healing to an all but forgotten people living in an extremely remote area of Liberia, nearly 140 miles from the nations capital.
A GREATER VISION
This clinic will not just mean medical care for those who live in the Po River, but for many of the rural villages in the surrounding areas. The medical clinic is the first phase
of a larger vision to reconstruct and restore this valuable pre-Civil War mission site, again providing for the medical, educational and spiritual needs of those living in and around
the Village of Po River.
LOCAL IMPACTS
In addition to our commitment to serve those in Liberia, a portion of the proceeds from Freedom Ride 2013 will be dedicated to supporting the life-changing work of the
Zarephath Health Center located in central New Jersey. The Zarephath Health Center represents an example of faith in action. It provides a venue for medical professionals and other
volunteers to use their gifts in practical ways by giving people who have fallen into hard times "a way out" by providing medical care to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay.
